2026 Theme: Divide By Zero
In partnership with Inner West Creative Network
EXHIBITION 2-14 June 2026 10am - 4pm
Opening Night - Thurs 4th JUNE 6-8pm
We Can Work It Out is a yearly group exhibition that explores the connection between creative practice and mathematical thinking. Each year features a new mathematical concept. This years theme ‘Divide by Zero’ draws on the heavily debated mathematical confusion of zero and what happens when you divide by zero. Many mathematicians will tell you the answer is infinity (because the closer you get to zero when dividing, the larger the number gets), others will tell you that if you divide by zero you get zero and others still will claim that it breaks maths logic all together.
More than 20 artists from the Inner West and beyond have responded to this years theme and created works in a variety of mediums and styles that make up this exciting exhibition.
Conceived and curated by Sara Buchner, 'Divide By Zero' is presented by sydneystreet.gallery in Marrickville / Bulanaming, in partnership with Inner West Creative Network. The exhibition is drawn from artists of all backgrounds and mediums. It has been a chance to push creative thinking, engage with a community of artists, and exhibit in a supportive and dynamic space.

Celestial Impressions began as a conversation about material contrast and shared artistic language. Although working in entirely different mediums, Karen and My Sang discovered striking parallels in their creative processes: layering, fluid movement, surface experimentation, and transformation through heat.
Celestial Impressions is an immersive exhibition that encourages audiences to slow down, observe detail, and experience art through multiple senses.
Artist Bio: My Sang Le
My Sang Le is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice transforms chocolate into sculptural pieces and abstract textural compositions. Working primarily with chocolate as her medium, she explores its structural and sensory possibilities through abstract works that blur the boundaries between culinary artistry and contemporary art.
Influenced by cosmic imagery, nature, memory, and emotion, My Sang’s creations engage multiple senses - inviting audiences to experience not only visual beauty, but also aroma, texture, and taste. Her work celebrates ephemerality: moments that dissolve, linger, and transform through sensory encounter.
Artist Bio: Karen Bayer-Johns
Karen’s work explores the interplay of fire and colour. Over time, this passion has evolved into kiln-firing metal and brilliantly coloured painting. Through the unpredictable magic of kiln-firing, she fuses liquid enamel to copper to achieve unique luminous colours. She creates wearable enamel art that captures inspiration from the natural world, translating intricate and ephemeral botanical forms and the vast, seemingly unchanging, organised chaos of constellations into pieces you can wear and display.
Exhibition: 25-28 JUNE 10am - 4pm
Opening Event: Friday 26th JUNE 6pm
Night Sky is an exploration and celebration of the beauty and vastness of the night sky and the nocturnal creatures that come out after dark. Following on in contrast from their previous duo show Solar Power, an ode to the sun - Night Sky brings together a new body of work by Annie Walter and Miriam Montgomery. Working across a range of mediums including painting, ceramics, textiles, woodworking and drawing, the work presents a love of, and fascination with, the natural world, the moon and the mysteries of the universe.
Annie Walter
Annie Walter grew up with a nomadic lifestyle, living in places from small rural Australian towns to large international cities. Now based in Melbourne, Annie creates designs for the music industry and beyond, influenced by her upbringing, old records, retro crafts, mid century illustrations, and the outdoors. Focusing on bright and playful styles, bold linework, and lots of vibrant colour, she uses the mediums of print, painting, embroidery, sculpture, woodwork, and just about anything she can get her hands on - creating a bit of fun and joy for the everyday.
Miriam Montgomery
Miriam Montgomery is a Sydney based artist and landscape designer. She is interested in exploring the way these two different practices inform and inspire one another.
Graduating from Sydney College of the Arts in 2007, COFA with a Master of Design (2013) and TAFE with a Diploma of Landscape Design (2019), she has been involved in many group exhibitions and recently held her fifth solo show. Currently designing gardens whilst working on new paintings, drawings and ceramics.

SYDNEY STREET GALLERY
Opening night: May 22, 6–8 PM
Czech-born, Sydney-based photographer.
My work is shaped by my restless eyes and an obsession with reflections. Through reflective surfaces, I capture moments that exist between reality and perception, where a single image can hold multiple perspectives at once.
I would like to invite you to my photography exhibition, where reflections become a way of seeing.
On the opening night, I will also be celebrating my birthday.
Join me for a drink and step into a world of reflections. A space that has quietly shaped my vision for more than two decades.
I DON’T LOOK FOR REFLECTIONS. I NOTICE THEM.
Exhibition Dates: FRIDAY 24 April 2pm - 6pm
SATURDAY 25 April 10am - 3pm
After thirteen years of working with porcelain—through wheel, slab, and more recently slip casting—this exhibition marks a pause in the journey to share the results.
A moment to reflect, to gather and to begin again.
Porcelain, with its translucency and fragility continues to be both a challenge and a collaborator. Fired to temperatures exceeding 1280°C, each piece moves beyond complete control, revealing a dialogue between material and maker.
Warping, cracking, and unexpected shifts are part of the process—evidence of the clay asserting its own voice. Across both functional and sculptural forms, this body of work traces Jen’s
ongoing investigation into the nature of porcelain. It speaks to persistence, curiosity, and a deep respect for the unpredictability that defines the making.
Artwork of Muhannad Al Azzeh
“Visions Through the Eyes of a Palestinian Prisoner" showcases the works of Muhannad Al Azzeh, a Palestinian and former political prisoner of Israel.
Muhannad was arrested and imprisoned twice for a total of four and half years.
He was imprisoned for two and a half years in Ofer prison in Israel for being a member of a non-violent political group at his university, where he was studying fine arts.
This exhibition contains original drawings made inside in prison, alongside paintings completed since his release which focus on life as a Palestinian in an Israeli prison and under occupation.

The Annandale Artisans are a collective of artists and makers working in various materials including clay, pen and watercolour, vintage buttons and beads, paper and felt, fabric and yarn. Some of the many items they create include ceramic tableware, vases and sculptural vessels, wall art and gift cards, one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces, decorations such as felted birds and flowers, and eco-friendly household items such as fabric coasters, bowl covers and knitted dishcloths.
The group evolved when Barbi Lock Lee, a successful ceramicist for 40 years, brought together some of her friends who also love creating beautiful and unique objects. Their front yard markets, held for the last few years, are always popular and well-attended; they also held a successful group exhibition at Balmain Watch House in 2025.

EVERY WOMAN HOLDS A STORY
She / Seen is a contemporary portrait exhibition centring modern femininity, emotional presence and individuality.
This collection celebrates women as complex, powerful and deeply human, not stylised ideals, but emotional landscapes. Through expressive layering, texture and bold colour, each portrait explores what it means to be visible in the world today.
Alison Lawther’s work captures moments of quiet confidence, vulnerability, defiance and self-possession. These are not portraits that decorate walls, they inhabit them.
She / Seen is an invitation to witness. To recognise. To feel reflected.
Known for her bold use of colour, expressive texture and emotionally resonant female portraiture, Alison’s upcoming exhibition explores themes of identity, presence and modern femininity. The exhibition presents a collection of large-scale and medium works that invite viewers into intimate encounters with each subject.
“This body of work is about presence,” Alison says. “How we hold space. How emotion lives in colour. These portraits are not passive, they meet the viewer.”
Based in Bulli, NSW, Alison is widely recognised for her vibrant contemporary portrait practice and as the founder and director of the Illawarra Portrait Prize. Her work has been collected privately and exhibited across the country.
The Sydney Street Gallery exhibition marks an important expansion of her practice into Sydney’s Inner West contemporary art scene.

An exhibition of paintings by Tracey Levett
Tracey Levett is an Australian artist based in Sydney. She is an abstract painter whose interest in philosophy is the enduring theme of her work. Her ethereal paintings composed of translucent layers of paint allude to her feeling that there is a subtle but eternal Presence in all of creation.
She incorporates text into her paintings, feeling that the energy of the words although often obscure is still felt when looking at the painting. Her powerful works leave the viewer with a sense of optimism and a feeling of ongoing contemplation.
Tracey has exhibited in Sydney, New York, Byron Bay and London. Her paintings are held in public spaces in Sydney and she has a strong following in New York where one collector has acquired over 50 of her paintings. She is constantly exploring new ways to express her inner life and to uplift and inspire those who see her work.

Workshop:
Button-making, Sunday 12 October 10am - 1pm
From a simple fastener to a coveted item beset with rules and regulations, the button has played an integral part in the social and industrial history of Western society. Originally a men’s object, buttons became an obsession for rulers of European empires, created by skilled craftsmen using precious metals and gemstones. The industrialisation of manufacturing lead to the eventual perception that buttons were common objects of little consequence.
Author and jeweller Lucy Godoroja challenges this perception by bringing together a group of makers. Using materials synonymous with each maker, the Newtown Jewellers Collective reimagines the button in all its glory.
Featured Artists: Lucy Godoroja with Linda Blair, Christina Gore, Sasha Matteucci, Kaoru Rogers and others.

Calligrapher & Fibre Artist
EXHIBITION SEPTEMBER 15 - 21 2025 10am - 4pm
Opening event 18th September 6 - 8pm
Reflections is a retrospective of my work over the last 20 years
I am a calligraphic artist with a background in textiles, working across diverse formats and exploring a variety of media.
My calligraphy takes many forms, sometimes discernible as letterforms, other times as free, gestural marks. By using stitch or pen on paper, fabric and parchment, I create a fusion between different materials.
Working with formats such as wall pieces, books and sculptural objects, enables me to approach each artwork from a different perspective. I also incorporate other techniques such as printmaking, to combine various media.
The artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee have inspired my art practice, as have Kandinsky’s statements, in particular:
“Form itself, even if completely abstract, has its own inner sound.”

JUNE 6 - 29 2025 10am - 4pm
Opening event 6th June 6 - 8pm
My approach as a professional artist is process based, experimental and exploratory. Where the search for that sense of uniqueness over the past 40 years is an essential part in my investigations as a painter, printmaker and fibre artist.
Since moving to the far south coast of NSW Australia 23 years ago my studio practice has given me the opportunity to delve deeper into my work. During this time my work has been about the landscape of time and place. To me the places I inhabit are an essential part of the process where that sense of memory echoes throughout my work. My works speak about moments of time with a primal force as I work. Letting the materials speak as each piece evolves. Where repeat motifs are formed in an experiential and gestural manner with a lexiconical approach to the spirit of place.
My studio practice at present is exploring uncommon ways of creating unique 2D work and 3D vessel shapes and forms that embrace ideas of duality. In particular by questioning the contrasting and conflicting mediums in my choice of materials.
Mediums include the use of found objects, clay slips, acrylic, matt sprays, joint compound and plaster of paris mixes with earth pigments using organic soya milk as a fixative. Also by pushing some boundaries with pigmented inks applied onto drop cloth then stripped to collage onto plaster vessels to create a rudimentary and wabi sabi appeal.
Techniques include mark making, plaster casting, paper mache, gelli plate printing, hand stitch, machine stitch, and knitting with plant fibres. The intention is to create textural elements by inviting viewers into my narrative.
At present my work is inspired by surrounding landscape of the far south coast of NSW Australia. In June 2025 I am having a solo exhibition in Marrickville at sydneystreet.gallery and will be filming my next online course with Fibre Arts Take Two, as well as continuing my practise as a member of Untethered Fibre Artists Inc.
Hosted by @sydneystreet.gallery. An exhibition combining artists of land, sea and sky in a range of mediums offering works depicting the natural world in an era defined by the rising threat of climate change and our relationship to the health of the earth.

For one day you can come and meet local artisans and makers, enjoy a coffee from the pop up at the front of the gallery, and check out all of the venues participating in this Makersville market trail.
Various artisans and creatives had a great day supported by the Inner West Council to make their creative spaces open for the public to come and get acquainted. We were lucky to have the guys from next door at Fab! Studios displaying some of their unique and finely crafted work in the gallery. It was great having visits from councillors including the Deputy Mayor who all showed much interest and support for the creatives in our area.
Just in time for Christmas, this is a great way to support local makers and artists. This exciting event will is being hosted across multiple venues in this vibrant creative precinct including our gallery at 19 Sydney Street.
